Get your closet in order and organized: Organizing Revolution Week #3

Organizing Made Fun

I would love to show you a master bedroom closet that's been organized and arranged to the very centimetre - but I have neither the time or the money to pull that off just yet. :-)

So I decided to tackle the linen closet. During the flurry of moving and unpacking, a lot of random boxes and stuff got shoved into it. I took this picture in the middle of pulling everything out and going through it on Monday night:
Organizing challenge - a closet

I discovered that I have more sheet sets than a single person really needs. And that I needed to learn how to fold a fitted sheet once for all, to save space. I watched three videos on YouTube and didn't get the hang of it until the third one:

I'm going to wash and inspect some extra sets - if they pass muster, they'll go to charity.

As with all of these organizing challenges, I've been determined to make do with what I have, and not spend more than $25 on new supplies. I bought two baskets for this:

Every project needs to be inspected by a cat:

I looked to Pinterest for ideas - I learned that rolled up towels are not only pretty, but they save space:

New Year's Organizing Revolution: Challenge #2 - Kitchen

Organizing Made Fun
I'm late in posting! This took a while - I decided to really go deep into the cupboards, which haven't been completely organized since I moved in ten months ago. As a Canadian, I'm not eligible for the prizes, so I decided I would get needed sleep, and not stress over missing the deadline.

This is how the kitchen looked during the house inspection. Before
Before

It was completely redone with fresh paint, counters, cabinets and appliances. I so love having a dishwasher!

After

If you followed me on Pinterest, you may never have expected that I'd end up dark cabinets. Well, they were included with the house package. And they've grown on me. :-)

Over the last year ... I added splashes of colour with wall stickers. I believe I got these at Wal-Mart.

The kitchen

The sign above the stove says "Happiness is an ocean breeze".

I found Rubbermaid drawer organizers that go with those dark cabinets.

This is my favourite organizing idea - a hanging shoe rack in the broom closet contains chemicals and cleaning supplies, including vacuum cleaner attachments.

New Year's Organizing Revolution: Challenge #1 - Office/Desk Area

Organizing Made Fun

I bought my first house in 2012 - I took possession on February 27. I have so many plans for the house and not enough time or dollars. I've been frustrated at my lack of progress of getting my stuff on the walls and really making it mine. So this challenge was good motivation.

My friends have said all along that they wanted to see pictures of my house as I set things up and they wouldn't mind seeing things "in progress". It turns out that I have a hard time showing rooms "in progress" - I want to say, "Ta da! Here is the finished room!"

Well, it's 2013, and I'm going to let go of that mindset. So I will show you my desk area of the second bedroom, which I use as a home office. In progress. With the battered computer desk I want to replace, and without the nice new shelving that I've picked out but have yet to buy and assemble.

For a REAL "before" picture - this is the area before the townhouse was renovated and I signed the purchase agreement *shudder*.

2nd bedroom - before

The same room, on the day I took possession. New paint, new carpet, new baseboards, new vents.

After

Here is a gloriously imperfect and honest photo of what the area looked like I before I started this challenge this week:

Office organization challenge

The white shelves on the left are two bookcases that have been sitting in my basement since I moved in. Ten months ago. I rearranged some of the wires and did a lot of cleaning up and sorting to make everything neater. Now all of my chargers are stored on the same shelf, for example.

Office organization challenge

No reorganization can go uninspected by the cats.

Office organization challenge

One thing I wanted to do was put up some of my photography. Here is a frame that waited about a year before finally being filled with photos and put up on a wall. And I only had one of the photos upside-down when I initially hung it.

Halloween and Kitties

Because I don't know when my windows are being replaced, I didn't go batshit crazy decorating for Halloween. I went for "friendly" and "charming" and "please please please come to my house I've lived in apartment buildings for so long and I've never trick-or-treaters living on my own ever so please come here I have candy".

Halloween 2012

On the window ledge are little dollar store LED lights and decorations. I went to Vegas earlier this month, that's where my money went. :-)

That white window screen I made this summer really stands out at night. Did not know that. At least it will be replaced, hopefully soon.

I also hung a battery-lit paper lantern from my mailbox and placed a cheerful dollar store pumpkin on the steps, to show that I welcomed trick-or-treaters. And I had to have a cat decoration too!

Halloween 2012

I got off the bus at 6 and was dismayed to see there were already trick-or-treaters so I quickly hustled home and turned on all the lights.

And lo, the trick-or-treaters came. The very first one was a toddler in a bear suit who tried to enter my house, he wasn't entirely sure why he was there.

There were about 30? In the space of three hours. In my initial excitement I was very generous with the treats, then started rationing them to one treat per child. Especially if the child was old enough to sport peach fuzz, and/or his voice has changed. Some of those boys were taller than me!

When it was 9:19 pm, I'd just had one more trick-or-treater, and I was down to four tootsie roll pops. The novelty had worn off. I turned off the lights and went upstairs for a bath.

What did I dress up as? I was initially going to do a very casual Star Wars fan. That morning I spotted my Soft Kitty hoodie and went a different way. I drew some whiskers on my face and I was a kitty.

Halloween 2012

And then I pretended to be a 15 year old girl on MySpace five years ago.

Halloween 2012

The cats were not impressed with this strange-people-coming-to-the-door nonsense. Chloe stayed upstairs the entire time. Hermione ran around the house, especially whenever the doorbell rang or someone knocked on the front door. Charlie was grumpy because he was trying to nap, while these hooligans kept coming to the front door and making noise.

In quieter times:
Kitties!

Kitties!

Sometimes I get to sit in that chair too. :-)

Oh Hell No

The hole in my ceiling

This is the hole blasted in my upstairs bathroom ceiling when I tried to fix a toilet.

I picked a plumbing company off of the Better Business Bureau website. I declined to book after-hours, as that came with a $199 fee just to show up. I have a working toilet in the half-bath, and I can still shower and bathe.

Having been in customer service, I have become very accommodating on the phone. I've dealt with many jackholes always trying to get the best deal, get the most money, ask for credit for the tiniest issues. I pride myself on not being an asshole.

I booked the appointment for today, for when I'd be back from Vegas. For 2-4.

First they called to say their tech was running late, because of emergency calls.

Then they called to say he was still running late.

Then the general manager called at 4 to say that the tech was still running late. I asked if I had time to run out to the store and he said "yes", and confirmed they had my cell # in case things looked up.

I went out - and discovered that the new Wal-Mart in the area is finally open. Yay! I was home quickly.

Then another woman called. The tech was on his way!

Then she called back. Because the tech was going to arrive after 6, there would be a $199 after hours fee. Was I okay with that?

I told her that after being delayed four hours, I was not okay with that fee, and I would be going with another plumbing company if they were going to charge me that. She said she'd get back to me.

When she called back, she couldn't do anything about the fee but she could reschedule me for Thursday morning. So we rescheduled.

I'm tired of having to go downstairs to pee in the night. Having watched many an episode of Hoarders, peeing in the bathtub is not an option. And I doubt that I can get another plumber in before Thursday, without an emergency fee. This is not an emergency. It's an inconvenience.

Then I tweeted about it. Ace Plumbing in Calgary.

Whatever happens, this is going on their BBB feedback. And if they also whiff the appointment on Thursday morning, I will try to find another. It's hard finding a reputable company without word of mouth - I'm automatically excluding anyone whose address is a private residence.

Seven Things About Me

I was tagged on LiveJournal, and am reporting here.

I got tagged: Choose seven random things about yourself, then tag five other people.

  1. I was tricked into auditioning for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in university. I knew I was tone deaf, so when a person encouraged me to try out, I asked her if there were non-speaking parts, and she said "yes" in order to get me to come to the audition. The truth is, there are about two spoken sentences and everything else is sung.
  2. Obviously I wasn't prepared to sing at the audition. The director told the auditioners that "O Canada" was a good audition song. So I sang "O Canada" in French, because I'd memorized it in French class the previous year and it would make me different than the other people who sang it in English. I had a great time being in the chorus.
  3. The next year, when auditioning for Godspell, I sang "Nothing" from A Chorus Line. It took chutzpah and a certain naiveness for me to do that. I had a great time being in the chorus.
  4. I still haven't painted any rooms in my house. I realized that I'm still in the renter's mindset of not making drastic changes, so I'll paint a bathroom when I get back from Vegas.
  5. I've submitted three photos to http://cat-shaming.tumblr.com. I love that blog!
  6. This weird guy struck up a conversation with me at a C-train station last week. He mentioned that he works with special needs kids as some sort of inappropriate pick-up tactic. It didn't work.
  7. I'm not going to tag anyone. I don't mind being tagged, but I get shy about tagging others. Besides, I have far more than five interesting people on my flist, how can I ever choose? :-)

Home and Garden

Today marks six months of home ownership! And I just signed my first proxy vote on a condo board homeowners decision. The board has voted to replace all windows, doors and fences. I could either pay out of pocket, or vote for an extra $50 a month, towards a loan. I voted for the monthly increase, I don't have an approximate $16K laying around.

The new windows will be more energy-efficient and won't let so much heat in. And they will be more secure than what we have now.

I bought tomato plants because I figured they'd be easy to grow. People are always talking about growing tomatoes. Some of you said that they're actually quite hard to grow.

Saturday's harvest of cherry and green zebra tomatoes:

Tomato harvest

I swear I just remembered to water the plants. :-) Okay, a third tomato plant has been struggling. It's hanging upside down from a planter and hasn't been getting full water. But the other two plants are thriving and producing. I had to harvest the green zebras to give smaller ones a chance to grow.

The truth is I don't actually like raw tomatoes. I don't like the taste or texture. I like my tomatoes chopped up and as part of sauces or salsa with herbs to cover the taste.

And it's true of the cherry tomatoes I've grown. But the green zebra ones - so far I've tried them not fully ripe, and I like them, Nice firm texture and the taste is nice.

I made a garden salsa, including chives from my garden, and it was so freakin' good!

Garden salsa

One lesson learned this summer: herbs in plants against the north wall get easily baked unless constantly watered. Next summer, I'll put something hardier in those pots.

Trellis

This morning glory is the first plant grown from seed that has flowered for me so far. Yes! The morning glories love the north wall.

Morning glory

Rather than pay $$ for a new couch or loveseat, I bought a slipcover. It covers ten years of life with cats. And it is cat approved.

My Backyard

I'm sitting in my backyard, with a glass of grape juice. My belly is full of barbecued pork.

Tonight was my best barbecue yet. I stacked the pyramid of brickettes, doused them with starter fluid, waited a minute as per the package, them lit them. I set a timer n my iPad, so that I wouldn't be tempted to start grilling too early. I grabbed potato salad from the fridge and ate that. Then I started watering my plants.

I'm surrounded by growth. The catnip is blooming with little pink flowers. The white nancy has white flowers. The cherry tomato plant has three wee green tomatoes. Two of the green pepper plants are budding.

All on its own, the biggest morning glory plant is twining around a trellis. It's actually a little freaky that it just knows to reach out and hold on.

The timer went off. I arranged the charcoal more evenly and went inside for pork. I came out and placed it on the grill. Then I continued watering my plants.

I turned around. Charlie was standing behind me, chewing on grass. Oh, that cat. I didn't fully shut the screen door behind me, it turns out. I exclaimed, he stopped chewing and ran back into the house, I closed the door.

Then I grabbed clippers and cut handfuls of grass. I brought them inside, where Charlie and Chloe immediately descended upon the blades. I suppose I rewarded Charlie for being naughty. Well, Charlie is a cat. He did what cats do. He ran inside when caught, instead of making me chase him all over the yard. Cats need grass for digestion. He got grass. I came back out, carefully closing the door all the way.

It's nice and cool here. Not swelteringly hot, not freezing. I have wooden wind chimes clicking in the breeze. I bought them in New Brunswick, before I ever had an occasion to use them, because I was on a feng shui kick and they are feng shui chimes. I kept them for at least 11 years before I had a place to hang them outside.

The first piece of pork turned out well. A little burnt on one side, but still very edible. The charcoal was still hot, so I went inside and grabbed the other piece of pork from the package. I grilled that while I ate the first piece. Now I have leftovers for tomorrow.

Charlie must be done with the grass. He's sitting at the screen door, meowing at me.

This backyard of mine ... this is my own little bit of bliss.

Gardening oops

Back in May, I noticed this plant popping up in my garden. I thought it might be a weed. A few questions here and there, and it was identified in a gardening forum as a wallflower.

Name the weeds

"Cool!" I thought. "It's not a weed after all, and it will look so pretty when it blooms!"

Only it never bloomed. I eventually mowed most of them down. They spread rapidly through the backyard.

In the last couple of days, there was a blooming.

Toadflax

"Cool!" I thought. "That's a butter'n'egg like in my grandmother's garden!" I felt moved and needed a moment, as I travelled back in time to my grandmother Anderson's flowers. How she always encouraged my enjoyment of her flowers on her farm. How she would send me out to gather wildflowers for baby and wedding showers that she hosted. I'd never connected my garden to her, but now it was plain to see another way in which she influenced me.

It was a very lovely moment, to have a reminder of her in my garden, without even planning it that way.

I should perhaps have not looked up this plant online. Because it turns out that it is Linaria vulgaris, aka yellow toadflax, aka ... a noxious weed as defied by the province of Alberta and the city of Calgary. Not prohibited ... but that explains why I have so many of them. Sigh.

Home Ownership

I bought the house knowing that the furnace was 30 years old. That was part of the price - old furnace. The home inspector said he didn't think it had been serviced ever. A Groupon for furnace cleaning and maintenance appeared that week and I bought one.

Dude was just here. He confirmed that it's never been serviced. The ducts were "disgustingly filthy" and he couldn't do too much work on the furnace until they're cleaned. The Groupon gives me a 10% discount on duct cleaning so I booked another appointment.

He did check the heat exchanger and it isn't cracked "yet". He recommended I get a new thermocouple and wrote down the details, so that I can save some money and buy it myself. Then they'll install it when they come back for the duct cleaning.

He said the filter has been changed in the past, but not recently. He replaced that, and showed me how I can replace it in the future every 4 months. The amount of dust that came off the old filter was so disgusting that I'm surprised I didn't have an asthma attack right then and there.

He estimates the furnace has about two years max left. I've known all along to be budgeting for a new one, so I wasn't surprised or upset.

Big garden update post

A couple of people asked for pictures. Since it wasn't raining yesterday, I went out and took pictures. I didn't realize it at the time, but yesterday was the four month anniversary of my taking possession of the house. Fitting.

These gloves have seen a lot of action in four months.
2012-0627garden23

Let's start with the before - the day I took possession. I didn't even know where the patio stones were under the snow.
2012-0227backyard

The north end of the backyard now. The little greenhouse, which my cats didn't destroy, a new trellis and planter, and more new trellises are against the fence. According to condo rules, I'm not supposed to attach anything to the fence.
2012-0627garden01

I would buy taller trellises, but I have serious doubts about being able to fit them into my car.

I cut the grass last weekend and it looks terrible. I'd let the grass and wallflowers grow, waiting for the wallflowers to bloom. They didn't. I decided to cut it all down and start over. Mini-wallflowers are everywhere. Meanwhile, the grass hasn't seen sunlight for a while. I've been raking it and laying down seed.

The little greenhouse. I forgot I'd bought one of those "Grow your own salsa" kits and only just started the seeds last weekend. We'll see if I was too late.
2012-0627garden02

There are also pots of sweet pea and cilantro and morning glory seeds. Today, some of the morning glory is sprouting, yay!

Last weekend's major craft project, inspired by Pinterest. Everything in the coloured pots are sweet pea plantlings that I bought. They're already reaching out to each other. Mint peppermint is in the vase. There is also a dill plant and another pot of sweet pea seeds, since I had a lot. I planted morning glory seeds in the planter, and they also started sprouting overnight, yay!

2012-0627garden03

This weekend, I want to get another trellis and planter, for visual balance, and also I think it looks cool. And I'd have even more vertical room for more plants ...

The wallflowers are all droopy after I cut the long grass that was holding them up. I had this trellis in the planter before, now I'm not sure what I want to do with it. The lights are solar-powered and blink at night.
2012-0627garden04

More recent purchases, in a hanging planter. A cherry tomato plant is in the middle, surrounded by heather, chamomile, and onion chives. I just planted sweet pea seeds in the empty spots.
2012-0627garden05

I'm allergic to strawberries, so I actually bought this strawberry pot to put bell pepper plantlings in. Some of them are surviving, but I wouldn't say any are thriving well. I recently put sweet pea seeds in the spots where the plants died. You can see some mini-wallflowers around the pot.
2012-0627garden06

This is the stepping stone that my sister made for my last birthday. I sprayed it with acrylic sealant before it went into the garden.
2012-0627garden07

I poured hot water over a patch of ground to kill the grass and weeds there, then laid down peat moss and perlite, then a whole bag of potting soil. And I planted radishes, to great success.
2012-0627garden08

Some of the grass and weeds poke through, so I keep plucking them out. I didn't cover up the plot while cutting the grass, so it's covered with grass clippings.

I remember growing radishes in Grade Two, so I figured if I could grow them when I was seven or eight, I could certainly grow them now.

My first planter. There is a rose bush thriving between two petunia plants. The rose bush is full of buds, and I can see that one is about to bloom. Yay! The border plants in front are White Nancy.
2012-0627garden09

This is a lilac bush, safely planted away from the gas and power lines. I doubt it will bloom this year, but it should be awesome next year. The constant rains have been very good to the bush, and it is thriving.
2012-0627garden10

Looking east - this is actually the same view as the before picture. I had to move the planter off the post I had it on, as it has become quite heavy. I bought a bracket and put it on the fence, but didn't screw it on.
2012-0627garden11

This is one catnip plant. It's growing like crazy. And probably part of the reason that Charlie is so desperate to get outside. :-)
2012-0627garden12

I have two chives plants doing quite well in the planter, plus French thyme, bee balm, and a surviving bell pepper plant.
2012-0627garden13

And at the bottom - a green zebra tomato plant. I actually thought the plant died after a frost, but didn't want to dig it out. It's making a recovery.
2012-0627garden14

Along the border of the east wall, I planted flowers. Of the climbing variety. That aren't morning glories. No, I don't remember the name. :-)
2012-0627garden15

This is the gate. And the little step stool I need to open it, because the latch is on the other side of the gate and I'm 5'1" tall.
2012-0627garden16

I haven't done much with the south part, other than cut the lawn and lay down seed. I did buy two ferns that prefer shady areas - Athyrium Lady. Maybe next year, I'll do a rock garden or something.
2012-0627garden17

When it isn't raining, I water the plants from here - it comes from the roof and has some pigeon poop in it for terrific fertilizer.
2012-0627garden18

On the left side of the steps - a lavender plant, one of the first pansy plants to survive, and a grapevine.
2012-0627garden24

2012-0627garden19

2012-0627garden20

And on the other side - more of the first surviving pansies, a pot of parsley and pansies that I got at my housewarming, and petunias.
2012-0627garden21

Behind them is what I've been calling "Pigeon Hollow", because that's where I found a dead pigeon and learned that home ownership isn't always pleasant. Every time I dig up ground to transplant something, I take the dirt and put in Pigeon Hollow to fill it in, then put down more grass seed. Someday, I'll get the image of the pigeon out of my head.

And this is my patio furniture. I scored the table for $15 at Ikea's Midnight Madness last week, and I already had the chair. I also bought a lawn chair at Midnight Madness, I'll assemble it this weekend, if it isn't raining.
2012-0627garden22

I forgot to get a new picture of the tomato plant that's flowering - it has four blooms now. I'll get a picture later, as well as pictures of the front garden, that my sister gave me for my housewarming.

And that is how my backyard looks for now!
